Default Anyone complete Thunderkeep mission with henchies only?

If you did, can you tell us your char's profession? And what tactics you used at the end? And did you need to provide the King with extra healing (over what the henchies do)?

I am asking because I am curious. I tried this mission many times, about half with only henchies (as air elementalist or as mesmer) and half with only people. And I found that I got much further with henchies only! Only at the big surge at the end, when a few bosses and several Jades, etc. attack do I lose it with henchies. Getting through the city and fort part is simple with henchies.

The trouble I have had with this mission with human players is that the team never has been good enough. And by good, I don't mean powerful. I mean good with respect to teamplay and sticking together. With humans, normally we fail long before we clear out the fort!

I can list a few of the mistakes that my human groups have made:
- not choosing and following one leader (who will also target)
- not targetting (everyone going after their own enemy)
- not killing the Dolyak healers first
- not sticking together enough, and activating more than one group at a time
- not waiting for the rest of the group to be ready to attack
- not taking into account the position of wandering mobs when going forward
- not staying close to the wall and close together inside the fort, activating the inner mobs while the outer mobs are still alive
- getting angry and frustrated, and then leaving the group

I decided last night that getting a 100% human party to complete this mission with would be like winning the lottery! So I put together a group of 4 humans and 4 henchies, and we did it! Henchies: Mhenlo + Devona + Cynn + Lina. Humans: E + E + W + N. Only I as E/Mo had to take two healing spells to help keep the king alive. Yes, henchies do heal the king, but in our case it would not have been enough. For this mission, the 50/50 mix was great: less mis-communication and confusion, and the henchy healers do a darn good job!

I would love to complete this mission also with my Mesmer and other characters, and that's why I am asking for tips by others that did this successfully with only henchies.

- human players are most fun to play with, but not when they are frustrated and impatient, and not when they don't have a sense of teamwork.

Well, there are the two main tactics in the last two replies: sit near the king, or go from door to door. I think the door to door tactic with henchies might be difficult, though, because if you don't kill them quick enough on one side, then some can get through to the king on the other side.

But its nice to hear that it is possible with henchies only. It is SO difficult to get non-frustrated, non-overly-desperate, good teamworking human players for this mission

To the last two posters: did you yourselves heal the king at any point? Or was the henchy healing good enough? With our 50/50 group last night, the king left his little corner at one point and joined the fighting! If I wasn't quick enough to notice this and quickly spam heal him, we would have lost!

Yes I did
But it was with my monk.
It was done with 1st try, only 1 hench died in the whole mission.
I killed the ginats with the catapults, running from side to side, after that
I just waited with the King.
Its much easier with henchies, because most players still have no idea how to play this game.
But as I said before I was a monk and had both hench monks.
So I could concentrate on healing the king, while my henchies did the rest.

I have only finished this mission with henchies. About to do it with my 4th character now. My classes were, warrior/monk (the hardest), monk/mes (too easy), ele/monk (again too easy).
I went back and forth from each catas and tried to damage incoming groups as much as possible and stayed with the king at all times when some get thru.
BIG TIP: leave the last boss alone till all others are killed then focus on him. If you try and kill him first the others will spike whole team with damage and you will lose. Most PUGs fail at this point.
fyi: do the bonus, don't be afraid. I have completed the bonus as well and haven't really noticed it to be any harder than not lighting the beacons.

I finished it withmy R/Mes and henchies. I assume you made it to the fort. From there creep around the top and take out the first two groups. Then down the stairs and hug the wall to the middle of the field. Then carefully pull the boss and kill him. You will pull in the left side group and get them....keep an eye on the king and if yu have a mass heal (rangers have healing spring) use it often. Once the center is clear. Go left up to the top and take out the last two groups.

Usually there will be a group outside the wall in one of the catapult zones. I found storm chaser (speed buff) helpful to run over and launch a few to whittle down the foes.

Then just group by the king and watch the approaches. You can take apart each group that comes in one at a time. If the jades do not come all the way to the top of the stairs...pull them up...if they group with a larger force later you are toast.

The jades and mursaat seem to be especially suseptable to fire skills. Good Luck.

I have done it with henchies after 2 or 3 tries and have tried it also 2 times with human players without succes. My character has been a mesmer/monk, I used Healing Breeze (healing prayers level 9, which is 7 regeneration during 10 seconds). Sometimes healed the king, yes.

After trying 2 or 3 times I decided that the easiest was to stay above next to the king fighting above the stairs; I though that this way the team would not get dispersed running from one side to the other (what makes healing harder). Enemies come spaced in small groups, and it has to be taken care with 1 of the bosses. I am not sure that I would be able to succed everytime, but it can be done with henchies, yes. Which by the way are the Guild War's story heros. :-)

I did it with an Eli/Necro (Although with all Pyro skills). Couple things I noted...

1. Stay near the King. The groups tend to come in near one at a time through one of 4 ways. When they come near, run part way out and meet them.

2. DON'T let Jade or Mursaat near the King. He's not infused and will die quickly.

3. Try and avoid anyone getting near the king as he will run out and try to kill them and then stand there. That makes it more difficult to keep him alive.

4. If a Boss comes along in the middle of it (Like a Mursaat Monk for me) then make sure to take out the regular troops before you beat on him. This also means that you ignore him if another group comes along and then kill him after.

I've done it twice now with Henchies using this logic. No problems.

The only way I can beat this mission is with henchies. My husband and i tried literlly for ove a month with others and had every problem that the op listed. I was so freakin frustrated.
Finally my husband tried with just him and me and henchies. He is a war/mo and I am a E/mo. I know he only took mending for himself and all other warrior skills while i brought nuking skill and then mending for me or the king and hands for who ever needed it. (normally the king)
We cleared everything up to the fort and then cleared just what we needed to get outside witht he door trick and then killed the jades out there.
We came back in and killed the rest of the groups besides the ele boss. Before we killed him we catapulted the giants waiting outside and then stated the cutscene.
For the rest of the mission we each took a side and looked out. WHen anything was in catapult range we did so on our sides until they came in at which point we'd retreat to the top of the stairs by the king and kill groups as they came up and then back to our posts at the cats.
We normally lose one henchie in the third wave which Id say is the hardest part but that is pretty much all. If you can get past that wave youre pretty much home. Dorians group is almost a let down after all you've gone through by that point.
I will say i think alot of what made this easy was our professions. Having a live warrior maybe not so much but I think one of the key professions for this is an heavy nuking ele. But by all means i think its just as possible with any other.
We also helped two guildies pass it with the 4 of us (e/mo, w/mo, r/me, e,me)
and then 2 warrior and 2 monk henchies

I completed it with all Henchies on my Ranger due to the fact that player groups take way too long to get into as a ranger. Not that I mind, since Hench team got it in 1 try. It's sad how they outperform 'intelligent' beings lol.

Anyways, It was really easy up until the Healiing Mursaat Boss....I kept up the catapulting, only letting the occassional group through, which the henchies mopped up very quickly. Except the Healing Monk Mursaat...that took me 45minutes to kill, I had to end up using all my refund points to max out my Markmanship just to get the tiny bit of damage I needed to do more damage then it healed itself for lol.

It was quite an experience, one I am proud to have had even though it took awhile. I gaurantee I still got it finished faster then all the people in town spamming "experienced, have done this quest many times..invite"

Edit - My Ranger build was a rapidfire type, Tiger's Fury + Max, dmg mod Shortbow = Alot of damage over a very short time. (Thank god too...anything less and that Mursaat Monk woulda made me quit lol) You could use poison or something though, that woulda brought it down fast, I was just pure physical damage though, no conditions at the time.

I did mission and bonus w/ only henchies as a R/Me.

Did mission several times succesfully before I finally got bonus. Trying to light 2 torches fast enough as a lone player before stupid invisible dwarves scream bloody murder is slightly hard. The actual "increase" in jade and mursaat is negligible, maybe 6 total. Might as well do it, if you can't handle that, you can't handle mission. I had to plug up 2 skill slots with escape and storm-chaser to run those 2 torches and being only human so it's definitely very doable.

Staying in middle of fort, lower part is easier b/c the groups have 4 paths once inside the fort and the upper paths takes a long time which screws up the timing b/c if next group goes lower, they come at about same time.

The trick with henchies is that if something isn't dead, and the next wave comes, make sure to use your agro circle to touch the new group a little. That way they'll stick to the bottom and attacking you. Your henchies will likely continue attacking the original targets for a bit. All you need is to agro the new group and can either continue with old targets or focus on new ones if they're jade and mursaat and leave mantle at low priority. Just watch your mini-map a bit.

To tropan and others struggling with monk bosses of any time. I'm ashamed at you especially since you're a ranger. Learn what interrupt/shutdown skills are. Every mission is MUCH EASIER if you get a ranger or mesmer who knows what they're doing in this regard. 1 mesmer and 1 warrior and 1 ele will take down a monk boss and basically any boss faster than 2 of your almighty warriors and 2 eles. 0 healing and 0 skills make bosses and any enemy in general quite useless. Brute force is not the way to win the game.

Hi all, and thanks for the input and tips! Too bad the frustrated players at Thunderkeep don't read this.

I just completed this mission with my Mesmer + 7 henchies. I stayed up near the king except for when I went down to the door to kill the boss monk (he comes in so early in the game that you have lots of time to go to him and come back). I was lucky because he was in front of his pals so it wasn't hard to take him down.

Otherwise I just stayed by the king. Used the catapults only in the very beginning to get the mob that stands there. I targetted first any Jade warrior or bow that came near, using ineptitude and clumsiness - my warriors then finished them quickly. Then I targetted whatever Mursaats were around with backfire and shame. I tried to leave the perfect armor boss alone until his friends were dead, but again because of all my mesmer stuff (also had diversion and chaos storm) he was really no problem. I left the other minions pretty much alone, went after them only with my mesmer staff so not to waste energy.

The only glitch was that I had to go outside to kill the last three because the seemed to be too scared to come in the fort.

A key to winning with henchies is to target correctly, so they finish a kill before moving on to the next group.

And yes, contrary to the common opinion out there at Thunderkeep, henchy monks DO heal the king.

Oh I should mention: during the battle several times the king came out of his corner and was standing somewhere on the stairways. I just kept an eye on him and kept targetting anything that came near him, and his health never dropped very much.
